Your appointment begins with a detailed discussion of your medical history, family risk factors, medications, and sun exposure habits. Then your GP will conduct a thorough head-to-toe skin examination using magnification and dermoscopy.

What Causes Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer develops when ultraviolet (UV) radiation damages the DNA inside skin cells. This damage triggers abnormal cell growth that can lead to cancer.
Australia’s intense sunlight makes UV exposure a major risk factor. Even short bursts of unprotected sun can contribute, particularly in children and adolescents.
Other contributors include:
- Fair or freckled skin
- A family history of melanoma
- A weakened immune system
- Certain medications or medical conditions
Your GP will assess your personal risk and recommend a follow-up schedule that’s right for you, whether annually or more frequently.
Who Is at Higher Risk for Skin Cancer?
You’re at greater risk if you have:
- Fair or easily burned skin
- Multiple or irregular moles
- A history of severe sunburn
- A family or personal history of skin cancer
- An outdoor occupation or lifestyle
- Weakened immunity (e.g., post-transplant or long-term steroid use)

What to Look For: The ABCDE Rule
Keep this guide in mind when examining your skin:
- A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other.
- B – Border: Irregular or blurred edges.
- C – Colour: Uneven tones or multiple shades.
- D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm (though melanomas can be smaller).
- E – Evolving: Any noticeable change.
If you’re uncertain, our GPs can assess, photograph, and monitor spots safely using dermoscopy. You’ll receive a clear explanation and plan for ongoing care.
Signs of Melanoma
Melanoma can appear anywhere on the body, even in areas not often exposed to the sun.
Watch for:
- A mole changing quickly in size or colour
- New, dark, or irregular spots
- A lesion that bleeds, crusts, or itches
- A mole that looks different from the rest (“the odd one out”)

Non-Melanoma (Keratinocyte) Skin Cancer
Two other common forms of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC):
- BCC: Often a pearly or scaly bump that doesn’t heal.
- SCC: A firm, red, or crusted lesion that can grow quickly.
These cancers are common on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, scalp, and hands. Both are highly treatable when detected early.

What About Other Skin Spots?
Not every spot is a cause for concern, but many benign lesions mimic early skin cancer. Common harmless spots include:
- Seborrhoeic keratoses: Warty, waxy patches common with age
- Sunspots (solar lentigines): Flat brown marks from UV exposure
- Cherry angiomas: Bright red vascular dots
- Dermatofibromas: Small, firm bumps from past minor injuries
